Jason Levien's Presentation to Season Ticket Members
On the evening of Thursday, September 11, Levien spoke to a gathering of season ticket holders at Audi Field. His presentation negated the assumption in my opening post that this is just a real estate deal for him. His engagement in the soccer side of the business was apparent: he regaled the entire group, and a smaller group that chatted with him after his Q&A was over, with many interesting details, making clear his personal involvement in many of the team's moves over the past few years, good and bad.
It was clear from chatting with other fans at this gathering (confirming communications I have had privately with many fans) that there is widespread dissatisfaction with team management, and that many long-time STMs are not planning to renew this year. Not taking the pledge, but following it. One fan told me, though, that he is not quite ready to go. I certainly respect that choice. Personally, I hope to be back.
Still, this leaves the question of whether fans can hope for significant improvement in the on-field product under his ownership. My question to him was -- is there a metric for your own success or failure as a team owner? Can you conceive of reaching a point where you conclude that your ownership is simply bad for the team, and you owe it to the team to move on? (I compared him to Dan Snyder, whose sincere passion for his boyhood football team is not in doubt, but who had to move on.
Levien did not answer on the spot, and although I thought of engaging him in the small-group aftermath, in the end I decided that this was not the time.
But we can all look forward to Levien's answer to my question.
